Sink and Float
TEKS
3.2A-F, 3.4A, 3.5A

Objective
The students will investigate the concept of sink or float by investigating different objects in water to test whether they sink or float by collecting and recording data on a graph. Students will connect their findings to other things that sink and float in our world and how those things affect our environment.

Questions
Why does an object sink or float?
How is sink or float a physical property of matter?
How does the sink or float property of matter affect you when you swim or play in the water?
Materials
Flip Camera
sink or float prediction worksheet
bowls
water
various objects to sink or float
float or sink results worksheet

Input
Making Connections Globally

Connect real life things and situations dealing with floating and sinking.
For example: Why do people float in the Dead Sea?

Environmental Connections:
Students discuss visits to the beach when they have noticed
marine debris and trash floating on the beach. They can give examples of how they have
participated in or heard of organized beach clean-ups on beaches. This lesson
will help them understand what marine debris is, how it is generated,
and how it came to be on the beach, which harms animals.

Environmental Connections: Oil spills floating on water and how they hurt our ecosystem and environment.

Guided Practice
Students are set up in groups of 4. Each students has a job such as materials person, recorder, note taker etc.
The recorder will record their group during the investigation and ask teacher made questions for students to discuss and answer.

Videos and photos of each group are posted on Voicetrends.com. Students will use voicetrends.com to type in text or record explanation of what procedures and outcomes are being discovered.

Technology Implementation
Students will share what they learned through voicethread. They students will present they hypothesis, predictions, observations and conclustions.

Students will have the opportunity to evaluate each other's presention and findings.

Check for understanding
stixy.com A way for students to create sticky notes on the computer discussing their observations and conclusions.

Conclusion
Present voicethread projects to other grade levels.

Assessment
The teacher can use tech4learning.com and create a matrix/rubric with the students to use as an assessment tool of their completed presentation/project.
